Columbiana welcomes pitches and submissions in a variety of different genres.
See below for further information & instructions:
Reviews: We publish standalone reviews (1,000 words or less) on our website on a rolling basis. We will consider reviews in any artistic medium, but we’re primarily interested in reviews of films / TV series distributed in the U.S. and of American literature (fiction or nonfiction). We don’t accept pitches for reviews; please forward the complete review in accordance with our submission instructions.
Essays: We publish shorter essays (3,000 words or less) on our website on a rolling basis, and and are open to the occasional longform piece (3,000-6,000 words). Essays relate to American arts and/or culture and generally feature some combination of opinion, personal experience, cultural criticism, and analysis. We are happy to consider, for example, pieces of cultural criticism that treat multiple artworks, as well as retrospectives on landmark works of the past. We accept pitches for essays as well as complete submissions; please refer to our submission instructions.
Interviews: We publish interview articles (up to 4,000 words) occasionally. Interviews should be with American creatives or cultural influencers engaging with Columbiana’s mission & values. If you’re interested in pitching an interview, please do so in accordance with our submission instructions.
Profiles & Reported Pieces: We occasionally publish longer pieces (3,000-6,000 words) more along the lines of a profile or reported piece. Profiles can follow an individual artist, for instance, in a journalistic format that is not a strict interview, and reported pieces can recap (for example) a festival, trend, happening, or event. We accept pitches for profiles and reported pieces to be published on a case-by-case basis; please see our submission instructions.
Fiction & Poetry: We publish new short fiction (generally literary fiction; up to 6,000 words) and poetry. For more information, see our submission instructions.
